5 out of 5 stars Perky Pet 203CP   July 2, 2008
I have had five of this specific model an highly recommend it. I have found that this size (vs the 16 oz model) suits my needs. The exception would be from about February to March, the larger model would provide nectar for about 2 days. During the rest of the year, the 8 oz lasts about 5 days. I use a plain sugar/water mix of 4 parts water to 1 sugar. I do not color the fluid as it seems the red of the feeder is enough to draw their attention.

I live in the Los Angeles area and have at least 3 types of hummers. I suspend the feeder with a bent coat hanger with multiple angles, providing a perch. They seem to take to this readily and will sit all day guarding their feeder. The small Rufus hummer is the most aggressive, yet the most skittish around humans.

Ants can be controlled by simply coating the suspending wire with vegetable oil. The insect (bee guards) can be heated with a flames and pinched slightly to eliminate the slipping off which seems to be common. If you have an interest in humming birds, I thing you should give this feeder a try.

4 out of 5 stars Easy care   September 27, 2007
This feeder is very easy to fill and clean. Be sure to provide another type for the orioles as they will come to this one and pull out the bee guards. Also be prepared for a visit from ants. Just the right size and will last 2-3 days even in August when they are filling up for their trip.

3 out of 5 stars Hummingbirds & Orioles love this feeder   August 23, 2007

Hummingbirds and Orioles constantly visit this Droll Yankees feeder. In fact, one hummer likes it so much he tries to chase all of the other potential feeders away. We generally have to refill it every other day during the summer. It does have a few problems, though:

--The yellow centers over the feeding tubes are easy to pull out, as the orioles soon discovered. The first thing they do after landing on one of the protruding 'flowers' is lever out the yellow mesh insert with their beak. We tried to counter this behavior by putting up an oriole feeder, but they ignore it and continue to return to the Droll Yankees feeder. (sigh).

--If this feeder is allowed to sway in the wind, it drips. It needs to be absolutely vertical.

--It is a bit messy to refill because of the dripping problem. We solved this inconvenience by bagging the feeder in plastic before bringing it inside for a refill.
