1 out of 5 stars very picky system   April 9, 2008

I purchased the sanitizer after a glowing review from another person, and ultimately returned it because it does not work with the plain tap water from my area. Our water is pretty hard, and the machine simply would not complete a cycle using plain tap water (as instructed). I initially tried to process 2 apples, and was told that it doesn't like apples because of the "wax". They told me to process 2 cycles of bottled water to clear the machine. After I did that, I tried to process plain tap water, and again got the F1 code. At that point I sent an e-mail (customer service was closed) and received a response that the machine doesn't like water with "contaminents". The "contaminent" in our water is calcium, which I can see would be a problem, but this information should be included in the product information before you buy, especially since the instructions TELL you to use PLAIN TAP WATER. Oh, yeah, one service rep also told me that sometimes it takes 3 to 4 cycles to clean, and another one told me it shouldn't take 4 cycles to clean. While I think this is a great idea, unless your tap water is filtered, the machine more than likely will not work for you.

I was very dissapointed with this product. It only worked twice and then it started malfunctioning (the F1 kept flashing). After various attempts I exchanged it for another one and the same thing happened. This time I did not hesitate to return it immediately and get a refund. The Amazon customer service was excellent on both occasions.

I almost sent my Lotus back after reading all those negative reviews. I used the Lotus for the first time and too had the F1 error message repeatetly. I gave up disgusted, to return the Lotus the next day. I put the bowl in my dish drainer to dry. The next day I noticed small brownish spots on the bowl and realized how bad my drinking water really is. I used filtered water and have no problems with F1 unless I use grapes, which we all know are heavily treated with pesticides and toxins.
A full bowl of grapes, even thouroughly washed, may take up to 2-3 F1 sessions. I really does keep my fruits and vegetables fresher too.

The spray bottle is a treat and regular treated water took care of some cat dodo splashed on my bathroom wall, which has a rough texture and is hard to clean. It also takes care of smelly areas - much better than any room spray which often aggravates my allergies.

If you have problems with the F1 comming up, check the water you're using and conisder what kind of food item you're trying to sanitize.

1 out of 5 stars Good Idea...if it worked : (   March 25, 2008

I ordered this product in hopes that it would work. I am an avid gardener and enjoy eating vegetables from my garden. This product could give me peace of mind knowing what I consume is free from bacteria. I was never able to complete a cycle of cleaning because an error occured each time. I called customer support and they wanted me to run it on bottled water and give a call back. Why should I use bottled water? Call me when the real deal is available.

5 out of 5 stars Quite Simply: It works!   March 23, 2008

I cannot say enough good things about the Lotus Sanitizing Sytem. It is an amazingly effective, safe way to keep your food safe and your house clean without chemicals.

I bought the Lotus mainly for the spray bottle and fell in love with it's cleaning abilities - along with the included microfiber cloths, the Lotus effectively cleans my kitchen, bathroom, mirrors and windows - even old stains on the carpet! My kitchen has older tile that shows it's wear but after using the Lotus for about a week, it gleams. Because the system purifies the water, it leaves no streaks or film on anything... even your shiny appliances and mirrors. Best of all, it's chemical free so there's no heavy perfumes or strong chemicals.

To test it's effectiveness on food, I tested a bunch of table grapes. Left on the counter in a bowl for nearly 2 weeks, only the grapes at the bottom of the bowl had started to brown. I treated all my veggies that week and am still amazed at how fresh they've remained. What really amazed me though was a batch of raw chicken that I treated - a couple days later when I opened the bag to cook the meat, the chicken was just as fresh as if I had bought it at the store that day.

A couple things you should know before you buy it:
- it is essential that you rinse your veggies well, I ran some asparagus through a cycle and tiny fibers from underneath the tops got sucked in and clogged the little spinner at the bottom of the bowl.
- you will still need to keep a bottle of all-purpose cleaner avaialble for emergencies. It takes 1-2 minutes to prepare a sprayer full of water, and since the water is only activated for about 15 minutes, it's impossible to keep on hand for sudden spills. Other than that, I've virtually eliminated all other household cleaners from my home.
- the directions says that you can process meat directly in the included bowl. No matter how effective this machine is at eliminating contaminents, I couldn't immageine putting raw meat in the same bowl that I treat my fruit and vegetables in. Instead, I run a cycle of water through the bowl alone, then pour it into another bowl where I soak my meat for a 2 minute cycle.
- It is a little noisy but I think the chemical-free trade off is WELL WORTH IT.
